Indications for Using Physical Therapy

Ankle pain is a common condition that various things can cause. However, some of the most common causes of ankle pain include:
  • A sprain is an injury to the ligaments, which are the tissues that connect bones. Sprains can occur when the foot suddenly turns into an awkward position, causing the ligaments to stretch or tear.

  • A fracture is a break in one or more bones. Fractures of the ankle can occur as a result of high-impact trauma, such as a car accident or a fall from a significant height.

  • Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. There are several different types of arthritis, but the two most common types that can affect the ankle are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons, which are the tissues that connect muscles to bones, caused by overuse or repetitive motion.

Underlying Causes

Depending on the underlying cause of your ankle pain, physical therapy can be an essential part of your recovery. In addition, if you are dealing with chronic ankle pain, physical therapy can also help you manage your pain and improve your quality of life.

Can physical therapy help with ankle pain?

Yes, physical therapy can effectively treat and manage ankle pain. The therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that includes specific exercises and activities to help reduce your pain and improve your overall function. A therapist may also use other modalities, such as heat or ice, to help alleviate your symptoms.

What's the fastest way to relieve ankle pain?

There is no one "fastest" way to relieve ankle pain, as each person may respond differently to various treatments. However, working with a physical therapist to develop an individualized treatment plan is often the most successful approach. This plan may include specific exercises, activities, and modalities (such as heat or ice) to help reduce your pain and improve your overall function.

What exercise is good for ankle pain?

Many different exercises can help treat ankle pain. Your physical therapist will work with you to determine which activities are best for you based on your symptoms' specific cause and severity. Exercises that help improve range of motion, flexibility, and strength are often the most beneficial.

Debbie
My PCP referred me to traditional physical therapy for a very painful, shoulder with quite limited mobility. After some 7-8 weeks my mobility returned but the pain remained and my PT suggested dry needling. I had never heard of it but was having so much pain, I researched it and decided to give it a try. In walks Ginger Morrisey. Not only is she knowledgeable and professional, she really listens. This is a rarity and one I much appreciated. My situation was not a quick fix. It had gone on for awhile before I sought help. But with each session came more and more relief. My goals were her goals. There was no question about my treatment that was out of bounds. It felt as though we were working together as a team in addressing my particular issues. Ginger is attentive to your level of comfort during the procedure. She is constantly evaluating and reevaluating your issues. I found her responsive to my communications both during and after hours. I, of course, tried to remain respectful of her time, but she was available to my communications. I spent over 30 years in the healthcare field and Ginger is one of those rare instances when a skilled, medical caregiver is matched by a compassionate therapist with an awesome bedside manner. And, by the way, the dry needling treatment DOES produce positive results...especially in Ginger’s hands! Thank you so much!

I felt 100% better after my first visit with Ginger. Pain that I had been “pushing through” was completely gone after 3 visits and I’m back to walking and moving in comfort. I really appreciate Ginger’s common sense approach to treatment and home exercises. Now I can’t wait to use my YMCA membership!
