Treat Your Forearm Pain Naturally in Charlotte, NC

What is forearm pain? Forearm pain is injury or overuse of the arm between the elbow and wrist. It comprises two bones, the radius and ulna, and multiple muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

What are the Causes of Forearm Pain?

In many cases, forearm pain comes from overuse or repetitive motions of the related muscles and tendons. Pain often stems from the repetitive or excessive use of the muscles and tendons of the forearm. In some cases, the pain may be due to an injury, including nerve compression, from a fracture, strain, or sprain. Arthritis is a common cause of forearm pain, as is carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition, nerve disorders, such as radial tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve entrapment, can cause forearm pain.

Symptoms of Forearm Pain

The symptoms of forearm pain vary depending on the underlying cause. In most cases, however, forearm pain will cause a dull, aching sensation in the affected area. The pain may worsen with activity or when you are in certain positions or make particular movements.

Other common symptoms of forearm pain include:
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Throbbing
  • Burning
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Development of a lump

Common Conditions That Result in Forearm Pain

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause arm pain while gripping. This condition is common among those who use keyboards or hand tools for work or play activities requiring object gripping, like tennis rackets and golf clubs. The cause of the pain stems from repetitive pressure on a nerve running through your wrist which gives you sensation in your hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome usually begins as numbness or pain in the wrist or hand which then progresses to forearm pain when you grip.

Tennis Elbow - Tennis elbow is an inflammation caused by gripping objects like tennis rackets, golf clubs, or paint brushes with force. While carpal tunnel develops at the wrists, tennis elbow occurs at the elbow due to inflamed tendons connecting it. Over time this repetitive motion and pressure on these joints may lead to small tears in these tendons. You may feel weakness and pain on your forearm as well as wrist discomfort when twisting and gripping objects (for instance handshakes or turning door knobs).

Forearm Tendonitis - Tendonitis (or tendinitis) is an inflammation of the tendon which connects bone to muscle. The most common reason for forearm tendonitis is excessive use. This can be caused by overtraining due to stress or repetitive exercise due to lifting excessive weights. The most severe form of forearm tendonitis happens when muscles are stretched, causing inflammation and pressure on the tendon, which leads to inflammation.

Preventing Forearm Pain

There are several things you can do to help prevent forearm pain. For example, suppose you play sports or participate in other activities that stress your forearm muscles and tendons, warm up before the activity and cool down afterward. Wearing appropriate safety gear can also help prevent injuries.

Take frequent breaks to stretch and rest your muscles if you have a job or sport requiring repetitive wrist and forearm motions. Ergonomic devices, such as wrist rests, can also help reduce the risk of overuse injuries.

Physical Therapy Benefits for Forearm Pain

Physical therapy can help to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve the range of motion. Therapeutic exercises can also help to stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons of the forearm, which can help to prevent future injuries. We will help you identify what's causing your discomfort and suggest lifestyle modifications like exercising more, methods for stretching specific muscles, and help you find ways to avoid aggravating it further.

Additionally, your treatment plan might include dry needling or deep tissue massage as needed. These therapies can help provide more immediate pain relief while you continue to work on your physical therapy exercise protocol.

Debbie, age 60 with Ginger after Cooper River Bridge Run

"I came to Ginger for PT after I was involved in a horrible car wreck. I had so many injuries I was walking with a walker with platforms for my broken hand. I was an avid runner, cyclist and swimmer. I was told that my knees were so badly injured that I would never run again. It was a very emotional time for me. Ginger worked with me and was very positive about my returning to running and all the sports that I loved. She was very knowledgeable, professional and fun. Not only did I get better and returned to running, biking and swimming, I had fun in the process and made a friend for life. In fact, Ginger has treated my husband and 2 sons as well. I have been treated by other physical therapists in the past, and I can tell you that Ginger exceeded my expectations by a long shot. She's the best! She gave me undivided attention each and every visit and she took the time to listen to my physical needs as well as my emotional needs after such a trauma. I highly recommend Ginger Morrissey for your orthopedic needs. She will get you back to enjoying life!"
